Needless to say, when the console is functional, all of the lights around the power button are green. When something goes wrong, you should see red lights flashing in a certain pattern. There are different red light patterns that indicate a different problem.

Here is a listing of the red light error codes and their meaning.

1.) One red light. One light means a hardware failure. After you’ve turned off the power, the cables should be disconnected.

Then reattach the cables and power up the console. Repeat this procedure on the hard drive. With the console turned off, disconnect and reattach the hard drive, then power up the console.

If there’s a memory unit on the Xbox, detach and reattach it after the power has been switched off. Then switch the power on again.

This should rule out issues caused by improperly connected cables, memory unit, or hard drive.

2.) Two red lights. The console is operating at too high a temperature Turn your console off for a few hours to give it a chance to cool.

Make sure that you do your gaming in areas that are ventilated and away from heat sources. Sources of heat include stoves, warm electronic devices, or direct sunlight. Make sure that the cooling vents are never blocked.

Using the console on shag carpeting or on the soft surface of your bed should be avoided. The vent openings are easily blocked when placed on these surfaces.

3.) Three red lights. Either the console or its power supply has a hardware problem.

The three red light condition can either occur because the console is getting too hot or it isn’t receiving adequate power. Start at the wall plug and check the connections of all power cords. If you look closely at the power supply, it will have a small light on the side. If you don’t see a green light on the power supply, then your Xbox is not getting the power it requires.

4.) Four red lights. There’s an AV cable that is loose. Reconnect the cable or replace if required.
