When it comes to the subject of psychic development, there seems to be no middle ground. People either believe that it is possible or they don’t. Usually, only those who have had at least one psychic experience of their own are willing to believe. Those who have not remain skeptical.

It is such a controversial subject that many people who have had psychic experiences do not admit it publicly. At least one researcher has used a modern brainwave monitoring device known as an electroencephalograph (EEG) to study psychic phenomena in order to learn more about how it works and how it can be developed. In one experiment, he hooked up a psychic healer to an EEG in one room and her client in another.

Our brains emit electromagnetic signals known as brainwaves. In normal waking consciousness, we operate at the relatively fast beta frequency. When we are calm and meditative, we enter the alpha state. When we are dreaming, we are in theta. In the very slow delta frequency, we are generally in deep sleep. To their surprise, researchers discovered that some individuals are able to remain awake while in the delta range.

In the above mentioned experiment, the healer entered a waking delta state. That was remarkable in itself, but what was even more amazing was the fact that her patient started emitting delta brainwaves minutes after she did. Psychics often say that they need to be “psychically attuned” to their subject in order to effectively read their thoughts or affect a healing. This study demonstrated that in this case, at least, it was literally true.

By extension, this phenomenon of attunement may also account for why skeptical researchers almost always get the negative results they expect to get and believing researchers get corroborating evidence. It is quite possible that the psychic energy of the researchers affects the performance of the test subjects. Those who are sympathetic with the process actually unconsciously help it succeed, while those who are antagonistic interfere with the process, even if they maintain a neutral outward stance.

There is much more work to be done, but at least now researchers have some objective data to work with. Many teachers of psychic development are now talking in more scientific terms and achieving better results with their students. One of the keys to success in all the psychic arts is the ability to enter a calm, receptive state of mind. There is a lot of evidence to suggest that the frequencies of healing, psychokinesis and other psychic phenomena are theta and delta. With practice, anybody can enter these states at will, once they have been taught how.
