Looking Out For Dog Diseases And Symptoms

New Jersey Real Estate | Poetry

There are sadly hundreds of different dog diseases and symptoms that can affect our beloved four-legged friends. Such diseases can range anywhere from viral, bacterial, fungal, parasitic, skeletal, musculature, cardiovascular, as well as behavioral and many others. However, most common dog disease such as urinary, dermatitis, arthritis, parasitic and infection diseases can be preventable and even treatable, with parasites and infectious diseases being some of the more frequent.

Infectious Diseases

There are several different categories for infectious diseases, being anywhere from fungal, viral, and bacterial. Some commonly-known viral diseases are rabies; hepatitis (liver); gastrointestinal-based infections such as canine parvovirus and coronavirus; and respiratory and neurological infections like canine distemper, influenza and minute virus Many viral infections can be prevented with the use of vaccinations or treated by a professional–although some may run more serious, especially for puppies.

Frequent kinds of bacterial or fungal diseases can affect the nervous system, bones, brain, eyes, lungs, naval cavities, skin and so forth. Such infections as lyme disease, bordetella and Rocky Mountain (spotted) fever are just a few of the diseases that can create problems. However, with the regular vaccinations and prevention treatment, much of these problems can be avoided ahead of time.

Rocky Mountain spotted fever and Lyme disease are transmitted by ticks and can often bring forth symptoms of anorexia, arthritis, fever, lethargy and fever, but can usually be prevented through topical, over-the-count treatments or anti-tick treatments. Bordetella is a highly-contagious disease that is contracted often through boarding kennels or in highly populated canine areas such as parks, showing tell-tale signs of coughing and can usually be prevent with vaccinations and treated in most cases; however, it can be slightly more severe with puppies.

Common Parasite Infections

Parasitic diseases can range anywhere from heartworm disease, mites, ticks, and fleas to intestinal parasites such as hookworms, tapeworms and roundworms. Heartworm disease is contracted through mosquitoes which multiplies and can infect lung arteries and heart chambers, often affecting puppies more easily than adults; however, it can be prevented with proper vaccinations and treatment methods. Tapeworms, hookworms and roundworms are parasites that can often cause vomiting, diarrhea and other like-symptoms which can grow serious if not treated properly, but can be prevented or treated with special medications that are often over-the-counter or can be issued by a veterinarian.

Most often mites contribute to skin afflictions such as mange, ear infections, scabies, cheyletiellosis, demodex and chiggers, which can also be contracted by humans, too. However, there are many ways to take precautions and a wide variety of prevention methods to use such as topical treatments or veterinarian-issued medication.

While not all dog diseases and symptoms can be treated or prevented, many common disease can be. By planning ahead, taking preventative measures, consulting with your veterinarian, and maintaining a proper amount of diet, exercise and a healthy environment, much can be avoided or, at the very least, maintained. Should your pet show signs of discomfort or is acting out of sorts, it is always best to see your veterinarian and to keep up on regular visits and vaccinations.
