Would you be mortified if someone in a top hat and tuxedo followed you into a restaurant and quietly joined your lunch date? How about three men with more to love dressed like superheroes asking your neighbors for donations to help you in your financial situation?

In Madrid, be sure your bills are paid off or you may be visited by one of these interesting characters. The recession has slammed Spain hard. Official figures show that the unemployment rate has sky rocketed, reaching 19.3 percent. That is one of the highest rates in Europe. Around four million people are not working. That’s the same number of jobless people as France and Italy put together. One business is flourishing however, that business is debt collection.

Spanish law is pretty lax when it comes to debt payment. They allow 95 days to settle bills unlike the 30 in other parts of Europe. This, coupled with the fact that Spanish courts give the matter low priority put collection agencies in high demand.

One company, El Cobrador del Frac – which translates in English as “The Debt Collector in Top Hat and Tails” – boasts more than 250 collectors, and an equal number of investigators and secretaries.Their goal is to work out some deal and retrieve retribution, not to run after people without the means to pay the bill.

For the agency, the new and most popular business is coming from constructive trade which is currently suffering from a huge industry slowdown. Homeowners owe cash to contractors, contractors owe cash to construction companies, construction companies owe equipment makers, and so forth and so on.

Last year, the agency had a wedding company contact them over a couple who did not pay the $83,000 bill for their extravagant wedding. The agency obtained a wedding guest list and began calling up guests one by one on the phone and asking them if they had the chicken or the lobster, and then asked them where to send the bill. Eventually the shamed couple paid up.

These ideas are interesting, (I guess that’s one way to describe it) but they won’t be this effective in due time. In this time of economic hardship too many people have debts and they honestly cannot pay. And to these people, it does not make any difference how much you humiliate them.

It’s no shocker that the largest banks have issues with their public image these days. To add to the anecdotal evidence of friends, family, and your own opinion, a recent report from Forrester Research alleges that America’s largest banks are trusted the least in the country.

Forrester Research came to this conclusion by asking about 4,500 people about how they feel about a statement that says that the bank they go to does what is best for the public and not the institution.

Those who answered positively fell into the minority, with a percentage of thirty three to sixteen percent. The bottom seven banks included Bank of America, Chase, Capital One, TD Bank, Fifth Third, Citibank and HSBC. Not surprisingly, data collected shows that for the last seven years, these banks have been at the bottom of the survey.

Analysts in finance remain dubious of the idea that the banks will regain a good image. Stephanie Anne Regina, a financial expert gives her opinion on the problem.

“I do not believe that banks theoretically can’t regain the trust of consumers. It is a matter of them not doing a thing that would bring it back. They should spend less cash on PR people attempting to help their image and more time on working to change their infrastructure.”

But can our issues with banks be our own fault? Passive and non-responsive, customers are not pulling their money out of banks. They may feel angry, but their behavior is not a reflection on these feelings.

Maybe if we got angry enough to pull our money out of our accounts and switch our funds to a smaller bank, then the larger banks would have reason to begin treating customers differently.

But regardless of the most intense outbursts when people became angry over the bonuses that were given to Wall Street, we still haven’t reacted yet. For the time being, it seems like things are going to stay at the status quo until things get so miserable that it is too late to turn around. – 35634

The government is stepping up as debt collection hustles rise. In recent news, Buffalo New York has been home to a number of unlawful debt collection techniques, and authorities have taken at least twelve people into custody. Despite the fact that the vast majority of collection agencies are legitimate and good for the economy, there has been a rising amount of deceptive and illegal practices.

In Buffalo, people have been caught calling up people who owe money and posing as police officers. They have threatened to send debtors into prison, or even take child custody away from them. And it doesn’t end there.

A recent civil case imposed a $675,000 penalty ever imposed on a debt collection business, for illegal and false practices. This includes harassing and lying to debtors, disclosing their debt to third parties, and depositing post dated checks early. These practices were accompanied by fake claims from agents saying they were lawyers or other figures of authority.

In addition to refusing to disclose the address or phone number of the “company” these agents even went as far as to call people who did not owe any money at all and attempted to collect from them. Despite claims that it was individual workers acting illegally, the Federal Trade Commission went after the business owners and won a case that served the biggest penalty ever for debt collection companies.

To skirt the issue of being a victim to fraudulent collection agencies, it is imperative that you know your rights. A collection company can never seize a debtor’s assets, bank accounts, or paychecks. They can not get a debtor fired from their occupation, and cannot make any kind of public disclosures concerning the debt, and they can definitely never threaten or engage in violent acts.

For further information, refer to the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, which outlines the regulations and rules of debt collection. – 35634

Tax season has come and so have the cyber crooks. IRS ploys are circulating, the latest one involving a legitimate looking email from the IRS that states that you can get your tax refund on a Visa or a Mastercard. It asks for your credit card number, your social security number, credit card expiration dates, card verification value numbers, amount shown on your tax return, filing status and other personal data.

A sample phishing email can be found on the IRS web site.

“After the last year’s calculations of your fiscal activity we’ve come to the conclusion that you’re able to receive a tax refund of $78.87. Please submit the tax refund request and give us 6-9 days to process it. Access the form for your tax refund by clicking here. – Regards, Internal Revenue Service.”

The IRS does not notify taxpayers of refunds, or any other payments that may be due, by email. Rather than click on the link in the message, you should forward the email to phishing@irs.gov, and erase the original from your email account.

IRS scams work one of two ways: swindlers mail unsolicited e-mails appearing to come from the IRS and tell recipients that they have refunds coming. But first they need to click on e-mail links and provide needed information, which they will use to steal a victims identity.

The second version is an email that portends to be from the IRS Criminal Investigation Division telling the person that they are under investigation for false tax returns. To learn more about the complaints against them, consumers click on the links which contain Trojan horse codes.

These codes take over computer hard drives and permit scammers to remotely access the computers and use them to send spam email among other things. If you ever do receive unsolicited emails from the IRS, they urge you to forward them the email. – 35634

With consumer debt at an all time high, having a debt can be overwhelming. Some people have looked into the internet and have seen advertisements promising debt relief as a quick solution. Enticing as these ads may seem, it is important to be on the lookout for the validity of the claim.

A good deal of these promise a quick fix, but that quick fix might be bankruptcy. Yes, bankruptcy is one way to address your financial problems, but in most cases it should be a last resort. The fact that you claim bankruptcy remains on your credit report for ten years which means that your chances of getting credit, employment, a place to live or insurance are significantly lowered.

It’s a good idea to consider other alternatives before deciding to claim bankruptcy. Speak with your creditors. Oftentimes a re-payment plan can be worked out that is modified or can be paid in installments. Credit counseling services can work with you and your creditors to make debt repayment plans.

If you are considering a second mortgage, be careful. These loans require your house as collateral. Bankruptcy can stop foreclosures, debt collection activities and it may get rid of unsecured debts. Exemptions are provided that let you keep certain assets. However, personal bankruptcy does not usually eliminate child support, fines, taxes, alimony and in some cases student loans.

It will not usually allow you to keep your property if your creditor has a security lien or mortgage that has not been paid. A relatively recent tweek in bankruptcy laws creates certain hurdles that you must overcome before you can even file for bankruptcy, no matter what type of bankruptcy. First, you have to get credit counseling from an organization approved by the government within six months before filling.

Also in certain cases you have to pass a test that requires that you confirm that your income doesn’t exceed a certain amount. – 35634

Tax season is here and so are the cyber crooks. IRS plots are circulating, the latest one involving an authentic looking email from the IRS that states that you can get your tax refund on a Visa or a Mastercard It asks for your credit card number, your social security number, credit card expiration dates, card verification value numbers, amount shown on your tax return, filing status and other personal information that might be helpful to them.

One sample of a phishing email can be found on the IRS web site.

“After the last year’s calculations of your fiscal activity we’ve determined that you’re eligible to receive a tax refund of $78.87. Please submit the tax refund request and allow us 6-9 days to process it.

The second version is an email that claims to be from the IRS Criminal Investigation Division telling the reader that they are under investigation for false tax returns. To learn more about the complaints against them, consumers click on the links which have Trojan horse codes.

These codes take over computer hard drives and allow con-men to remotely access the computers and use them to send spam email among other things. If you ever do receive unsolicited emails from the IRS, they urge you to forward them the email.

Bad debt can feel like a monkey on your back. It’s always on your mind, and sometimes the stress can be crippling. You may be able to take solace in the fact that you are not alone. There are thousands of people just like you in the United States that are going through the exact problems.

Filing for bankruptcy may seem like the best choice at the present moment. It can help you to get around loan payments. But before you jump the gun, think long and hard. If you end up filing for bankruptcy, this will stay on your credit report for ten years and any attempt to improve credit, obtain a job or residence, or car will be futile.

Something to consider is professional help to take care of your credit card debt. This is important, so do some research. Check the internet, talk to financial agencies and ask for recommendations from others who have gone through the same problems. Be sure that your debt settlement agency is legit. Many tout promises of debt annihilation but will merely tell you to file bankruptcy and charge you to do it.

After you find the perfect debt settlement agency, work with them step by step. One of the beautiful things about this is that the company will work and communicate with the bank or card company for you. That means no more phone calls from the banks or collection agencies.

Also, debt settlement corporations have a professional relationship with the banks and other such establishments that can help you. They will let the creditor know that you are on the verge of bankruptcy and that they will not collect anything if this is going to happen.

So, you can see now why considering aid from a professional to take care of your debt makes a large difference. You can use this way to obliterate all of your credit card liabilities; one at a time from the card that charges the highest quantity of interest to the card with the lowest.

Mallory Megan works for a (http://www.rapidrecoverysolution.com) debt collection agency. She also composes articles on business and finance, the credit industry and (http://www.707creditscore.com/rapid-recovery-solutions) debt collection.
