Brazil’s Boi Bumba. Forget Carnival!
Forget Brazil’s famous carnival for a moment. There’s another festival that makes any trip to Brazil worth it on it’s own merits.
There is another. Brazil’s 2nd biggest festival sits awaiting out in the jungle for those willing to make the journey.
Boi Bumba is an annual Amazonian festival that while largley unknown outside Brazil, is on par as an experience with it’s better know cousin Part of that experience for outsiders is actually getting to the festival itself.
The festival is held in the town of Parintins. Parintins’ usual population of 100,000 doubles over the festival week as outsiders stream in via a 20-30 hour boat trip or a one hour plane ride from the jungle city of Manuas. Getting to Manus in the first place is bit of a mission from the coast, so the festival’s relative annonimity outside Brazil might have something to do with it’s remote location.
Boi Bumba’s roots go back around a hundred years. Each festival is the culmination of months of work pimping up costumes and dance routines, and of course picking out the hottest girls and guys to lead the parades.
The story running through the history of the festival revolves around an old rivalry between the towns residents. The red team (the working-class Garantidos) fight the blue team (the upper-class Caprichosos) in an all singing and dancing match where the winner is decided on who parties the hardest.
The winner of the festival is announced at the end of the night, with both teams doing their best to impress judges and the crowd with there performance, floats and costumes.
If you want the experience of a lifetime then consider Boi Bumba an option. You will be sharing this experince with far less tourists than carnival which means a more local experience of this amazing country and its people. Boi Bumba takes place on the 28th, 29th and 30th of June – 35634
